Mexico grain output to fall in 2026-27 as imports rise
The forecast calls for corn production to drop nearly 2% year on year to 24.5 million tonnes, while corn imports are projected to rise more than 2% to 26.8 million tonnes.
Mexico’s grain production is forecast to decline in marketing year 2026-27, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, pushing import demand to cover gaps in domestic supply. The FAS pointed to population growth and rising feed use that keep grain demand robust, even as output falls.
The FAS said corn, rice and sorghum production are expected to fall, citing weak profitability, elevated input costs and erratic weather. It added that the United States is expected to remain the main supplier as corn, wheat and rice imports rise to meet demand.
For corn specifically, the report forecasts production declining nearly 2% year on year to 24.5 million tonnes, with corn imports projected to increase more than 2% to 26.8 million tonnes. The FAS linked the corn outlook to limited profitability, continued elevated imports and erratic weather patterns associated with El Niño.
