USDA undersecretary Luke Lindberg named WFP executive director
The five-year appointment was made on Sept. 18 by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and FAO Director General Qu Dongyu.
Luke J. Lindberg, undersecretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), was appointed executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for a five-year term, according to World Grain.
Lindberg succeeds Cindy McCain, who led WFP from April 2023 through May 2026 before stepping down due to health reasons.
World Grain also said that Carl Skau, WFP’s deputy executive director and chief operating officer, served as acting executive director in June while WFP searched for a new executive director.
The appointment was made on Sept. 18 after consultations with the WFP Board at a special session at WFP’s Rome headquarters, and World Grain quoted WFP executive board president Carla Barroso Carneiro congratulating Lindberg and emphasizing urgency in addressing global hunger.
