Most UK plug-in hybrids cannot use rapid 50kW chargers

Only 26% of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles sold across the UK’s top 20 models can use rapid chargers rated at 50kW or more, according to analysis cited by The Guardian Business.

The report said three-quarters of those popular PHEVs are unable to use rapid charging, raising concerns that many function more like petrol cars with a heavy battery attached.

The Guardian Business noted that PHEVs are marketed as a compromise that can run on electric batteries and combustion engines, enabling longer drives while still aiming to reduce emissions.

The analysis included models such as the Jaecoo 7, Ford Kuga, and Hyundai Tucson, and focused on their ability to access higher power charging.
