Jobs and inflation data loom for Wall Street rate outlook
The monthy employment report is due October 2, with inflation data also expected to shape expectations for the Federal Reserve's next moves.
Investors are set to scrutinize upcoming employment and inflation reports to gauge whether the Federal Reserve will adopt a sharper path of interest rate hikes, a backdrop that could challenge a recent US stock market rally, Reuters reported in a week ahead preview.
The monthly employment report, due on October 2, is expected to be the main event for Wall Street, while a key inflation gauge will also be in focus.
The preview notes that US equity indexes hovered near record levels on Friday, with the S&P 500 less than 1% below its mid-August peak, supported by technology and AI-linked stocks.
Reuters said investors are watching how the data may influence Fed thinking, with the central bank beginning rate hikes this month for the first time in three years to combat high inflation, according to Jim Baird of Plante Moran Financial Advisors.
