Apple ordered to pay over $5.7B in haptic patent dispute

The jury found Apple liable for haptic technology used in iPhones and Apple Watches, a case Taction filed in 2021.

A US jury ruled that Apple owes San Diego-based Taction more than $5.7 billion for using Taction’s patented technology to power haptic feedback in iPhones and Apple Watches, according to Insurance Journal.

Apple said it plans to appeal what it described as the largest verdict of its kind to date, while Taction’s attorney said the ruling vindicated its patent rights.

The dispute began in 2021, with Apple denying the allegations and arguing the patents were invalid.

Insurance Journal also reported that the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit revived the case last year after a 2023 San Diego federal judge found Apple did not infringe the patents.
