ByteDance becomes top China data center tenant amid AI infrastructure boom

SemiAnalysis estimates ByteDance rents nearly all of its China data centre footprint, making it the largest tenant as AI demand drives spending by major peers.

ByteDance accounts for roughly one-fifth of China’s delivered data centre capacity, according to new estimates by research firm SemiAnalysis, making the TikTok owner the country’s largest data center tenant.

SemiAnalysis based its estimate on tracking more than 1,000 facilities in China run by over 60 companies, and said ByteDance rents nearly all of its data centre footprint. It linked ByteDance’s buildout to its AI products, including Doubao, a user assistant, and Seedance, a video generation model.

The report notes that ByteDance is private and has not disclosed its financials, but capital spending by listed rivals has surged. Alibaba Group, Tencent Holdings and Baidu spent a combined US$20 billion on capital expenditure in the second quarter, more than double the year-ago figure, the outlet said.

SemiAnalysis added that all three tech giants reported negative free cash flow in the same quarter for the first time on record, underscoring the cost pressures tied to AI-related expansion.
