CFPB examiner sues bureau over alleged race discrimination

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 18 in federal court, alleges retaliation and disparate impact tied to a 2024 reassignment after equal employment opportunity activity.

HousingWire reports that a CFPB compliance examiner, Thaddeaus Sims, has sued the bureau in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The complaint, filed Sept. 18, names Mark Paoletta in his official capacity as acting director and alleges Title VII violations including race discrimination, disparate impact and retaliation.

According to the filing, Sims links the alleged actions to his reassignment in 2024, saying the move brought added responsibilities and heightened scrutiny following protected equal employment opportunity activity. The complaint also describes a pattern of unfavorable employment actions that began in 2024 despite Sims describing a strong performance record.

Sims is seeking a jury trial. HousingWire reports he has worked at the CFPB since 2014.
