Chinese professor says one-third of youth are not suited for marriage

A viral interview featuring Chinese professor-influencer Liang Yongan has reignited debate over China’s changing marriage norms after he argued that at least one-third of people are ill suited for marriage.
Liang, 72, a professor of Chinese language and literature at Fudan University in Shanghai, has drawn a large mainland social media following, with nearly one million followers for his commentary on youth culture and relationships.
In the interview, Liang said marriage requires the ability to care for and make sacrifices for another person, and that this is why he believes a substantial share of young people do not fit the institution.
