Hong Kong expects 7.44 million trips at mainland border checkpoints

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said crowding is expected to peak this weekend, and it does not plan to extend service hours at any checkpoint.

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department expects its sea, land, and air control points to handle about 7.44 million passenger trips during mainland China’s National Day “golden week” break, covering inbound and outbound travel by Hongkongers and visitors between October 1 and 7, according to SCMP Economy.

The department said passenger flows are expected to peak this weekend and that the most popular control points are likely to be Lo Wu, the Lok Ma Chau Spur line, and Shenzhen Bay.

Officials also said none of the city’s checkpoints will have their service hours extended.

SCMP Economy also notes that authorities previously projected Hong Kong would welcome about 1.29 million mainland visitors over the break, while last year’s total reached 1.4 million during an eight day holiday period that included the Mid-Autumn Festival.
