Aviva warns England homes in flood zones could become uninsurable

Aviva said 115,000 new homes are expected to be built in flood zones over the next decade, while 6.3 million properties in England face flood risk.

Aviva chief executive Amanda Blanc warned that England is building homes that could become uninsurable in the future as flood risk continues to rise, according to remarks carried by BBC Business.

Blanc said the risk of flooding is “absolutely increasing,” and she questioned why construction is continuing in known flood areas, telling the BBC that the building locations need to be reconsidered.

The BBC reported that the Environment Agency estimates 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are at risk of flooding, and Aviva research found that one in nine homes built between 2022 and 2024 are at medium to high flood risk.

Aviva also projected that 115,000 new homes will be built in flood zones over the next decade, and Blanc said construction bordering those zones requires a different approach to make properties more or less vulnerable.
