China’s CICIR urges shared language on AI risks with US
China’s state-linked think tank said the next US-China AI dialogue is due to be held in November after Xi and Trump agreed to formalize a new mechanism in Washington.
Beijing and Washington should start by developing a common way to discuss AI risks rather than trying to settle wider technology rivalry, according to a Beijing-linked think tank advised to the two sides.
The China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), affiliated with China’s Ministry of State Security, made the recommendation days after Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed to formalize a new AI dialogue mechanism during their Washington summit.
Under the agreement, both countries will exchange views on the risks and benefits of AI, and they will set up a bilateral communication channel for AI-related incidents, with the next dialogue scheduled for November.
CICIR director Liu Chong said the talks should begin by building shared understanding of emerging AI risks and then gradually establishing trust between the two sides, SCMP Economy reported.
