China’s Mengxiang returns with basalt core samples from South China Sea

China’s deep-ocean drilling ship Mengxiang has returned from its first expedition in the South China Sea, where it set a national depth record and collected basalt core samples, according to SCMP Economy. The trip was organized for 30 days by the China Geological Survey, with the mission described as a test of the operational capabilities of the ship, operated by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, SCMP Economy reported. The voyage included drilling and sampling at two sites. SCMP Economy also reported that the expedition produced “a large number of precious core samples and data,” which could help researchers better understand the region’s tectonic history. The reporting cited a report published by the official ministry newspaper Science and Technology Daily.
