Manchester City found guilty over Premier League rules breach scheme

Manchester City was found guilty by an independent commission over Premier League financial rule breaches tied to a scheme involving so-called “sham” contracts, the league said. The commission concluded the club created commercial deals with sponsors designed to disguise where the funding was coming from.

According to the league, the breaches relate to serious violations between seasons 2009-10 and 2017-18, a nine-year period.

The league said Manchester City could face sanctions including possible stripping of titles, financial penalties and points deductions, with the specific sanction to be addressed in a further hearing. The commission found the scheme helped City inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than 900 million pounds over the period.

Manchester City has an appeal option, with the club set to appeal against the verdict before a Friday deadline, the report said.
