National Park Service leases 7 acres at Floyd Bennett Field to nonprofit
The nonprofit Runway Green plans a $60 million education ecosystem and the project has received $9.3 million in public investment commitments, including $1 million from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
Bisnow reports that the National Park Service has agreed to lease 7 acres at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn to the education nonprofit Runway Green. The deal spans 60 years under an agreement covering the federally owned Gateway National Recreational Area.
Runway Green plans to use the site to build a $60 million education ecosystem, with ground expected to break next year on the campus's first phase, a 3-acre urban farm with The Campaign Against Hunger.
Longer-term plans include a public high school, a ropes course and campgrounds, and career-connected opportunities in fields such as clean energy and building decarbonization.
The project will be built on a small strip of the roughly 1,300 acres of NPS-owned grassland, salt marshes, and tidal mudflats that also include a marina, along with remaining airport structures. Bisnow also notes the initiative has drawn $9.3 million in public investment commitments, including $1 million from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
