Nifty heads for weakest monthly expiry in six months as yields rise
Foreign investors’ FPI cumulative short positions in Nifty and Bank Nifty futures hit a record 319,669 contracts as of Monday.
LiveMint Markets said the Nifty 50 is set for its weakest monthly expiry in six months on Tuesday, as surging bond yields coincide with persistently high crude oil prices.
The outlet reported that Nifty closed at 22,780.25 on Monday and fell to a Tuesday low of 22,569.65 on the expiry day of the September derivatives series, while monthly expiries on the National Stock Exchange occur on the last Tuesday of each month.
LiveMint Markets added that foreign investors increased their defensive positioning, with FPI cumulative short positions in Nifty and Bank Nifty futures reaching a record 319,669 contracts as of Monday.
It also noted that the weakest monthly expiry so far this year was recorded on 30 March, when Nifty closed at 22,331.4, a month after the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict, before recovering to 24,334.55 at last month’s expiry on 25 August.
