North Korea mines blamed for DMZ blast that injured 2 South Koreans

South Korea’s defence minister said the mines appeared to have been planted as part of North Korea’s border fortification work near the military demarcation line in the DMZ.

South Korea’s defence minister said North Korean land mines caused a blast last week in the demilitarised zone, injuring two South Korean personnel, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Defence Minister Kang Shin-chul told a parliamentary committee that the mines were North Korean and appeared to have been planted as part of North Korea’s border fortification work near the military demarcation line that bisects the DMZ.

Kang said the incident violated the Korean war armistice agreement and warranted a response against Pyongyang, and he raised the question of whether North Korea emplaced the mines knowing South Korean troops could enter the area and suffer harm.
