Aviva CEO warns new UK homes in flood zones may become uninsurable

Aviva’s chief executive said 115,000 homes could be built in flood zones over the next decade if current construction patterns continue.

Aviva CEO Amanda Blanc warned that homes being built now in UK flood-risk areas could become uninsurable in the future, citing what she described as an increasing flooding threat, according to Guardian Business.

Blanc said flood risk is rising and urged attention to where new housing is developed rather than continuing current construction patterns, adding that the issue does not seem to make sense, the outlet reported.

The Guardian Business piece cited the Environment Agency, saying 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are at risk of flooding, and that the figure could rise to around 8 million, or one in four properties, by mid-century.

It also reported Blanc’s view that, if building patterns stay the same, 115,000 homes will be constructed in flood zones over the next decade.
