UK government pays highest interest rate since 1999 on 10-year debt

Bank of England data also showed UK mortgage approvals fell to 54,918 in August, the lowest level since the end of 2023, as higher borrowing costs deterred buyers.

Britain’s government paid the highest interest rate since 1999 in a 10-year bond sale, according to rolling coverage from the Guardian Business.

Separate Guardian Economics coverage tied the broader backdrop to housing demand, saying UK mortgage approvals fell to 54,918 new home loans in August on a seasonally adjusted basis.

That level was described as the lowest since the end of 2023, with the piece attributing the decline to rising borrowing costs deterring potential home buyers.
