Hong Kong police say suspicious iPhone Pro charges top HK$30m
Police said the reported card transactions were all cancelled, and investigators linked the pattern to Apple security measures not being in effect for the affected online orders.
Hong Kong police have received more than 1,500 reports of suspicious credit card transactions involving Apple’s new iPhone 18 Pro series, totaling more than HK$30 million, according to SCMP Economy.
The force said the number of reports had risen to 1,503 as of Tuesday, up from about 1,200 two weeks earlier, and added that all of the transactions had been cancelled.
At a Kowloon City district council meeting, Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming said Apple’s online commerce security measures were not in effect in the cases reported, so transactions did not require verification.
Chow said the situation meant one-time passwords or mobile app verification were not required, allowing fraudsters to place large orders using illegally obtained credit card information.
