US-China war narrative falls short, as both sides keep diplomatic room
A recent analysis in SCMP Economy argues that the decade old “Thucydides Trap” framing of US China relations does not match the current reality, saying the idea that friction is destined to end in war is a misfit.
The piece, by Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies professor and Renmin University executive dean Wang Wen, points to how both Beijing and Washington are behaving as evidence that they can coexist without automatically drifting into conflict.
It says pundit and foreign policy circles often treat frictions as inevitable regardless of what has actually occurred, and argues that a proper assessment should begin with the states of power and actions by both governments, not just the prevailing narrative.
