Brazil’s SUSEP outlines reforms to strengthen catastrophe protection
The regulator’s proposals include new natural disaster funds, local and sovereign catastrophe risk transfer, and expanded use of Brazil’s Insurance Risk Letters and catastrophe bonds.
Brazil’s insurance regulator SUSEP has published proposals aimed at improving the country’s financial and insurance protection against natural catastrophe risks.
Artemis reports that the plan follows a working group of industry players, regulators, and experts focused on how Brazil can enhance its catastrophe risk protection.
The proposals cover multiple approaches, including natural disaster funds for Brazil, catastrophe risk transfer at both local and sovereign levels, and parametric insurance.
SUSEP also outlines further development for insurance-linked securities, including broader use of the Brazilian Letra de Risco de Seguro regulations and potential capital markets backed reinsurance support via catastrophe bonds.
