China imposes 55% tariff surcharge on Brazilian beef from Thursday

China says the extra charge will be levied starting Thursday, after Brazil exhausted its 2026 allowance of 1.106 million tonnes.

China will levy an additional 55% tariff surcharge on Brazilian beef starting Thursday, after Brazil filled its import quota for 2026, industry sources said, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reported that China’s Ministry of Commerce announced the surtax on Wednesday, following a confirmation by China’s customs administration that Brazil had used all of its 1.106 million-tonne allowance for the year.

Under China’s quota rules described by SCMP Economy, the extra tariff applies from the third day after a country reaches its limit, and beef above the quota will face a 67% rate including the regular 12% import duty.

With the quota exhausted, SCMP Economy said Brazil is effectively shut out of China’s biggest beef market for the rest of the year.
