China’s R&D spending rises to a record 2.8% of GDP in 2025
R&D spending totaled more than 3.92 trillion yuan in 2025, compared with a 2.7% OECD average.
China’s research and development spending reached a record high of 2.8% of GDP in 2025, surpassing the OECD average for the first time, Science and Technology Minister Yin Hejun said, according to SCMP Economy.
The report said China’s R&D expenditure exceeded 3.92 trillion yuan, or US$584.8 billion, while the OECD average stood at 2.7% for the year, citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
An analyst quoted by SCMP Economy said the result shows China’s innovation investment has reached a level comparable to developed economies, and they expected the R&D share of GDP to keep rising.
The outlet also reported the analyst’s view that Beijing will continue adjusting funding allocation and improving research efficiency, with a greater emphasis on basic research to support original breakthroughs.
