DeepSeek open-sources tools for Huawei Ascend AI chips

Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek has open-sourced core software tools designed to run on Huawei Technologies’ Ascend AI chips, in a push to reduce dependence on Nvidia processors amid US export curbs, according to SCMP Economy.

DeepSeek, based in Hangzhou, said it released six software modules that mirror its earlier open-source tools for Nvidia’s AI chips, aiming to build an “independent and controllable” GPU software ecosystem, as described in a post on its official WeChat account.

Among the releases is an Ascend-compatible version of TileLang, a programming language intended to streamline the development of high-performance GPU and CPU kernels.

TileLang’s project update on GitHub says it lists Nvidia as its primary back end but now officially supports Huawei’s Ascend 950 accelerators, including features such as native code generation, automatic scheduling, and synchronisation.
