Egypt forecasts record wheat output and lower imports in 2026-27

Egypt’s wheat production is forecast to keep rising, with the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service projecting a record 10.0 million tonnes in the 2026-27 marketing year, World Grain reports. The FAS estimates Egypt’s wheat imports will drop 23.0% for 2026-27 to 12.0 million tonnes, citing increased domestic output and excess carryover stocks held for strategic reserves. If realized, it would be Egypt’s lowest import total since 2022-23. The production increase is expected to come from a larger harvested area, 1.5 million hectares versus 1.33 million in 2025-26. The FAS links the expansion to Egypt’s government strategy aimed at both extending land devoted to wheat cultivation and boosting yields on existing acreage, including wider adoption of raised bed cultivation, early maturing high-yield wheat varieties, and expanded distribution of certified seeds, according to World Grain.
