NorthPoint Development offers $10K checks to win support for data center
The developer proposed a $165M community benefits package tied to local approval for the first phase of its 15-building, 300-megawatt campus.
As opposition to data centers grows in Pennsylvania, NorthPoint Development is offering residents a $10,000 payout as part of a community benefits package, according to Bisnow.
The company, which plans a 300-megawatt hyperscale data center on about 1,300 acres in Hazle Township, about 40 miles south of Scranton, said it originally targeted construction this year and delivery in 2029, but resident pushback has become a major hindrance.
NorthPoint has proposed a $165M community benefits agreement, including $45M to be spread equally across about 4,500 eligible households, with residents able to use the funds at their discretion for items such as home improvements, energy upgrades, or landscaping.
The money would be disbursed if local officials approve the developer to start work on the first of 15 buildings, and Bisnow notes that each check would exceed 15% of the township’s median 2024 household income.
