Pentagon awards Boeing $20 billion contract for next fighter jets
The new F/A-XX strike fighters are set to replace the Navy’s Super Hornets starting in the 2030s, with Boeing also having won a prior Pentagon selection during the second Trump administration.
The Pentagon has selected Boeing to build the US Navy’s next-generation fighter jets under the Next Generation Air Dominance Program in a contract valued at US$20 billion, officials announced Tuesday, according to SCMP Economy.
The program calls for production of F/A-XX aircraft, also described as strike fighters, to replace the legacy Super Hornets fleet beginning in the 2030s.
SCMP Economy reported that the announcement marks the second time Boeing has been selected by the Pentagon during the second Trump administration for a sixth-generation weapons system.
The outlet also noted that in March 2025, Trump announced the US Air Force had chosen Boeing to build a new stealth fighter.
