About 150 Chinese language teachers leave the Philippines over safety fears
The teachers were withdrawn after Philippine security officials criticized educational exchanges involving China as potential national security threats.
Around 150 Chinese language teachers in the Philippines are returning home following criticism from Philippine security officials that educational exchanges involving China could pose national security threats, according to local media cited by SCMP Economy.
The withdrawal affects teachers stationed at schools including Immaculate Conception Academy in Greenhills and Jubilee Christian Academy in Quezon City, both in Metro Manila, SCMP Economy reported.
SCMP Economy said Manila-based Chinese Commercial News reported that the inviting organisations, the Philippine Chinese Education Research Centre and the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, made the decision after families of Chinese instructors raised safety concerns amid increased scrutiny of Chinese educational programmes.
SCMP Economy also noted that the development follows growing public scrutiny of Chinese education-related activities in the Philippines.
