Americans back independent AI safety benchmarks despite slower development

A Quinnipiac University poll found 91% of respondents view AI guardrails as important for the US, and 81% prioritize safety over innovation.

A Quinnipiac University poll found a vast majority of Americans favor requiring artificial intelligence companies to meet independent safety benchmarks for their models, even if that approach slows development, according to Insurance Journal.

The survey, released Wednesday, found 91% of respondents think it is very or somewhat important for the US to establish guardrails for AI systems, while 81% say safety should come before the pursuit of innovation.

Insurance Journal reports the results come amid growing public anxiety about AI risks and follow President Donald Trump’s announcement of an agreement with Silicon Valley leaders for the industry to police itself on safety after a White House lunch.

The article says the White House executives agreed to voluntary safety measures in lieu of new federal rules, though the poll reflects strong support for independent benchmarks.
