FAO food commodity index rises 6% year on year

The FAO said wheat and maize prices hit multi year highs as logistical constraints in the Black Sea region pushed importers to seek alternative origins.

The FAO reported that its benchmark global food commodity index rose 1.5% in September, with wheat and maize prices reaching multi year highs. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 136 points in September, up 2 points from its revised August level, according to the United Nations agency's latest report.

FAO data showed crop based commodity groups including cereals, vegetable oils, and sugar all increased from the previous month, while the meat price index declined and the dairy price index was stable. Year over year, the FPI was 7.4 points, or 6%, higher than a year earlier, though it remained 24.3 points, or 15%, below its peak reached in March 2022.

The Cereal Price Index averaged 122.8 points in September, up 6 points, or 5%, from August, and 18 points, or 17%, above its September 2025 value. World wheat prices increased 6% from August to the highest level since August 2023, although daily quotations eased toward the end of the month.

World Grain said the rise in wheat prices was largely linked to logistical constraints in the Black Sea region, which led importers to shift toward alternative origins, the FAO added.
