French high school closures continue as student protests turn violent

The unrest has forced the closure of about 400 schools, while officials said student complaints are valid but condemned the violence.

Hundreds of French high schools remained shut after student protests intensified into clashes with police, with some teenagers lighting fires outside school grounds on Friday, according to SCMP Economy citing Agence France-Presse.

The protest movement, which began last week in the Paris region and spread nationwide, has included lycee pupils in their final years blocking access to buildings and confronting police, as the closures of some 400 establishments continued.

Students involved said school hours are excessively long and conditions are poor, including overheated classrooms and staffing shortages, with many absences among teachers.

The French government said the underlying grievances are legitimate but condemned what it described as urban violence.
