Hong Kong retail sales rise 5.6% year on year in August
Retail sales value climbed to HK$32 billion, and online retail sales value grew notably as spending shifted to digital channels.
Hong Kong’s retail sales rose 5.6% year on year in August, indicating consumer spending picked up after growth had eased for two straight months, according to provisional figures released by the Census and Statistics Department.
The retail sales value reached HK$32 billion (US$4.1 billion). A government spokesman said growth showed up across many retail outlet types, while online retail sales value grew notably, reflecting a shift in consumer spending toward digital channels.
Sales in the first eight months of the year were up 8.5% compared with the same period in 2025. The report followed a 4.5% rise in July, when sales reached HK$31 billion, the lowest monthly value recorded in the first seven months of the year.
