Hong Kong seen as possible top arbitration hub by decade's end
A Bar Association chairman said Hong Kong’s arbitration caseload has grown rapidly, and the city tied Singapore for second place globally last year in a Queen Mary survey.
Hong Kong could overtake London to become the leading global arbitration seat within the next decade, according to Jose-Antonio Maurellet, chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association, speaking to the South China Morning Post.
Maurellet pointed to Hong Kong’s role as a global fundraising hub for businesses in mainland China and beyond, and said the city has seen rapid growth in arbitration work, including high-stakes cases that attract elite international legal talent.
He also noted that Hong Kong tied with Singapore as the second-most preferred arbitration location globally last year in a survey by Queen Mary University of London, behind London.
