Trump says Europe will begin releasing heavily stocked diesel

The plan discussed by EU governments would cover 50 million barrels of diesel over 20 days, after talks involving France and the White House.

European countries have agreed to release heavily stocked diesel oil, US President Donald Trump said, as the White House sought to cool surging fuel prices tied to the Iran war.

Trump said the release would begin immediately, following Friday discussions among EU governments about a proposal led by France to release 50 million barrels of diesel over a 20 day period.

Reuters reported the talks also included discussion of releasing 50 million barrels of crude oil by International Energy Agency members.

Under the proposal discussed by European governments, the diesel volumes would be released in part over the 20-day period in response to Trump’s demand for a rapid fuel-stock release.
