Insurers warn AI-generated fraud claims are surging
Speakers at InsureTech Connect Vegas 2026 said AI fraud is producing fake images, narratives, and even synthetic testimony at scale, forcing carriers to rethink claims defenses.
Artificial intelligence is enabling fraudsters to fabricate insurance claims at scale, and insurers are still early in figuring out how to respond, according to a panel discussion at InsureTech Connect (ITC) Vegas 2026 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Insurance Business reports panelists described AI-enabled tactics including forged images, invented narratives, and synthetic or fake testimony, saying the ease of generating realistic material has driven an increase in fraudulent submissions.
Shift Technology CEO Jeremy Jawish said the industry is seeing an enormous spike in AI-linked fraud, including fake pictures, fake narratives, and fake testimony in claims.
The panel also highlighted the financial stakes for health insurance, with Cain Hayes pointing to approximately $4.5 trillion in U.S. healthcare spend and noting that a large portion of it is tied to fraud, adding urgency to efforts to strengthen claim processing and oversight.
