Liberty Insurance sues Broan-NuTone over $456K bathroom fire claim

A federal lawsuit filed Sept. 29, 2026 says a bathroom exhaust fan malfunctioned on April 21, 2025 and the motor overheated after its built-in thermal safeguard failed.

Liberty Insurance Corporation has sued Broan-NuTone in federal court, seeking to recover more than $456,000 after a bathroom exhaust fan fire, according to a complaint reviewed by Insurance Business.

The insurer filed the case in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York on Sept. 29, 2026, saying it stepped into the shoes of its policyholder to pursue the manufacturer after paying out on the claim.

The complaint centers on a Broan-NuTone bathroom exhaust ventilation fan with a light installed in Pennellville, New York, and alleges that on April 21, 2025 the fan “malfunctioned, caught fire,” damaging the home and personal property and causing loss of use.

Insurance Business reports the lawsuit attributes the incident to a failure of the fan’s motor thermal protection component, alleging it “failed to operate as intended,” leading the motor to overheat and start the blaze, while the fan was used normally and maintained properly.
