Mutual of Wausau sues Amazon over coffee maker fire claim

The insurer said it paid $301,936 under a homeowners policy and filed the suit on Oct. 1, 2026, seeking recovery through subrogation.

Mutual of Wausau Insurance Corporation has filed suit against Amazon.com, alleging an Amazon Basics 5-cup coffee maker caused a fire that severely damaged a Denmark, Wisconsin home, according to the Insurance Business.

The insurer said the coffee maker sat on the kitchen counter for just under a year before the Oct. 2, 2024 blaze, which it says caused substantial damage and forced the family to temporarily relocate.

Insurance Business reports that Mutual of Wausau filed the case on Oct. 1, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, seeking to recover money it already paid out to policyholders under the homeowners policy.

The complaint alleges post-fire examination traced the cause to the coffee maker’s thermostat and thermal protectors, components designed to shut down the heating element if it gets too hot, and Mutual of Wausau said it paid $301,936 and is pursuing additional recovery through subrogation.
