Pakistan approves up to 1 million tonnes of wheat imports for 2026

Pakistan’s wheat flour prices rose 13% over four months to $476 per tonne, adding pressure ahead of the first sizable imports since 2024.

Pakistan has approved wheat imports of up to 1 million tonnes in 2026, the first major intake since 2024, according to a report cited by the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture. The move is aimed at addressing rapidly rising domestic wheat flour prices.

The FAS said wheat flour prices in Pakistan increased 13% over the last four months, moving from $422 per tonne to $476 per tonne. It added that prices were nearly 60% higher in August 2026 versus the prior August.

The FAS attributed the volatility to a shift in Pakistan’s wheat marketing policy. It said provincial governments changed public procurement programs to move procurement toward the private sector, which reduced government buying and pushed farmers to sell quickly to private traders after harvest.

The report also linked the price jump to reduced transparency around wheat reserves after government involvement shrank. It said private buyers, middlemen, and hoarders were able to monopolize reserves with limited transparency or regulation, contributing to speculation and higher prices for consumers.
