Philippines plans updated maritime chart filing on UN for Thitu Island
The updated chart would map water depths, island contours, and features around Thitu, Lawak, and other parts of the Kalayaan island group.
The Philippines announced it plans to file an updated maritime chart with the United Nations to support its claims in the South China Sea, focusing on Thitu Island, locally known as Pagasa, according to the SCMP Economy.
The outlet reports that observers say the filing would not establish Philippine sovereignty on its own, but could allow Manila to identify and challenge competing claims using more precise legal terms.
SCMP Economy also reports that, beyond the technical document, the updated map is intended to formally document the country’s presence and its sovereignty claims over Thitu.
The chart, as described by Presidential Assistant for Maritime Concerns Andres Centino, would include water depths, island contours, and features around Thitu, Lawak, and other parts of the Kalayaan island group, including areas that remained above water at high tide.
