Two new islands emerge near Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano
Indonesia’s agency said one island-like mound was about 760 metres offshore to the northwest and the other about 495 metres to the southeast, after a 25-hour eruption in early September.
Two new islands have appeared offshore from Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano, potentially the first land to emerge within the Krakatoa caldera in nearly a century, according to SCMP Economy.
The agency placed one formation about 760 metres off Anak Krakatoa’s northwest coast and the other about 495 metres to the southeast, and said it had not verified their dimensions or elevation above sea level.
SCMP Economy said the agency’s preliminary interpretation is that magma released during the continuous eruption reached the surface via an elongated northwest-southeast opening, with erupted material forming two offshore island-like mounds.
The islands were discovered after a 25-hour eruption in early September, SCMP Economy reported.
