UK rail train lessors paid executives £3.5m in 2023

The companies also paid out nearly £400m in dividends to shareholders, as the government weighs moving toward direct train ownership.

The UK train rolling stock sector saw three major firms’ chief executives paid a combined £3.5m last year, after the companies distributed almost £400m in shareholder dividends, according to the Guardian Business.

Rail unions accused the rolling stock companies, known as roscos, of profiting at passengers’ expense, a criticism tied to the firms’ accounts published this week.

The figures come as UK ministers announced a new rolling stock strategy and are considering direct ownership of trains through Great British Railways rather than leasing them from the private sector, the article says.

The report also notes that Porterbrook Holdings paid £80m in dividends, with additional details emerging from the companies’ accounts.
