Conservatives consider government cuts beyond their 47 billion pound pledge

Leaked comments from shadow chancellor Andrew Griffith say savings plans could extend across every part of government if the party wins the next election.

The Guardian reports that leaked comments from the UK Conservative Party’s shadow chancellor, Andrew Griffith, suggest the party is preparing for government spending cuts that go beyond the 47 billion pound package it previously pledged if it wins the next election.

According to the report, Griffith discussed making additional savings, along with fellow shadow cabinet ministers, with the cuts envisioned across “every part of government,” and the scale described as similar to austerity-era cuts.

The comments have emerged ahead of the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, according to The Guardian, framing the potential measures as a continuation of large-scale austerity if the party takes power.
