Hong Kong fencer uses TCM alongside Western care after ankle injury
After a partial ankle ligament tear in April 2026, the fencer turned to traditional Chinese medicine while preparing for the Cairo Foil World Cup, citing limited access to her usual medical team.
Hong Kong fencer Janelle Leung Ya-lei, ranked 53rd in the world, is studying how athletes use traditional Chinese medicine alongside Western medicine for injury recovery, according to SCMP Economy. The story comes as Leung recently helped Hong Kong win bronze in the women’s foil team event at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
SCMP Economy reports that Leung sustained a partial tear to her ankle ligament in April 2026, just seven days before the Cairo Foil World Cup. With limited access to her regular medical team while away from Hong Kong, she relied on her Chinese medicine knowledge.
The outlet adds that Leung is pursuing the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science programme at Baptist University, which she entered in 2023. The report describes this training as part of how she approached recovery around her competition schedule.
