Hong Kong plans to import hundreds of foreign domestic carers by 2027

The scheme calls for carers to complete a 150-hour training course in their home country before working in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s Labour and Welfare Secretary Chris Sun Yuk-han said the city will start importing hundreds of foreign domestic carers in the second half of 2027 under a new pilot scheme.

Sun said the carers would combine specialised elderly-care skills with general domestic capabilities, and would first have to complete a 150-hour course in their home country.

He added that Hong Kong will need to set up a local mechanism, including a professional organisation in the city, to ensure the workers complete the training so residents can be confident they can perform required tasks.

Sun said the pay for the imported carers could be up to 20 per cent higher than that of domestic helpers.
