Hong Kong first Legco president urges review of seat count to cut costs

Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai said the current 90 Legco seats cost more than a possible 60-seat setup.

Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, Hong Kong’s first Legislative Council president since the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, urged a review of the number of Legco seats with an eye on using public funds more efficiently, according to SCMP Economy.

Fan made the comments on a radio show when asked whether the current 90 seats were too many, saying that keeping 90 seats costs more than a 60-seat arrangement and that she agreed with that view.

She also said Hong Kong and Shenzhen authorities had discussed developing a plot at the two cities’ border before the 1997 handover, but the plan failed due to opposition within the government.
