UK care advocate calls for faster reforms to social care funding
The op-ed says years of political neglect have left at least one family paying overwhelmingly from its own resources for three years of care-home time.
The Guardian describes Andy Burnham’s view that personal care should be treated as “social insurance,” arguing that the risk should be shared rather than left to families to manage alone.
In the opinion piece, Heather Stewart writes that her mother was not diagnosed when Theresa May announced her 2017 general election manifesto with care funding at its heart, but that almost a decade later the system has left families unsupported.
Stewart says her mother has been in a care home for three years, with funding coming overwhelmingly from the family’s own resources, and she argues money is needed now for changes to arrive quickly.
Overall, the outlet characterizes Burnham’s plans as admirable while emphasizing that reform cannot wait for further delays.
