Ministers weigh new oversight for England’s devolved spending powers

Labour is pushing for England’s mayors and council chiefs to be held to account for extra revenues that are expected to be devolved to local levels, according to The Guardian Business.

The outlet says ministers are considering multiple oversight ideas as Whitehall prepares to hand over more revenue, including a new Westminster select committee, enhanced reporting rules, and a new audit body focused on local and regional government.

The Guardian also reports that one proposal under discussion is whether certain mayors could be recalled by the electorate if they misuse spending powers, similar to how rule breaking MPs can be recalled.

The government plans to publish a white paper on “rewiring the state” later this month that will detail plans to transfer additional income tax revenue to regions.
