Russia damages Kyiv Northern Bridge as Germany’s Merz visits
The strike came shortly after Friedrich Merz arrived for a surprise trip and air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv as residents were warned about incoming Russian drones.
Russia struck a bridge in Kyiv on Sunday shortly after Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, arrived in the Ukrainian capital on a surprise visit intended to demonstrate European support amid an upsurge in attacks, according to the SCMP and an Agence France-Presse account.
Air raid sirens blared across Kyiv as Merz arrived under tight security, with warnings of approaching Russian attack drones.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the strike damaged the road surface on the Northern Bridge, one of several bridge crossings linking the eastern and western parts of the city over the Dnipro River that have been hit in recent days.
Images posted on messaging channels appeared to show a missile hitting the structure, producing a fireball.
