UK car industry faces pressure to tariff cheap Chinese EV imports
EU duties on Chinese vehicles can reach 45%, and officials warned the UK that absent tariffs could trigger protectionist EU barriers on UK exports.
The UK car industry is facing pressure to impose tariffs on low priced Chinese vehicle imports as manufacturers try to balance access to both China and Europe ahead of potential trade measures, according to the Guardian Business.
The UK currently stands out for not applying import taxes to Chinese vehicles, even as the US has largely excluded them and the EU levies duties of up to 45%.
EU officials reportedly warned Andy Burnham that if the UK does not impose tariffs, Brussels could respond with protectionist “made in Europe” barriers that would target British exports, particularly hurting UK carmakers in their largest market.
The Guardian Economics also notes that UK ministers have so far resisted the calls to tariff Chinese vehicles.
