New Year Bookshop opens in Hong Kong’s Mong Kok amid closures
The roughly 600 sq ft store opened on Sunday on Sai Yeung Choi Street South with more than 2,000 new and second-hand titles.
Small independent bookstores in Hong Kong’s Mong Kok have faced closures as economic headwinds and political uncertainty weighed on the neighborhood’s literary scene, according to SCMP Economy.
Defying the trend, 41-year-old bibliophile Grace Lau invested a six-figure sum to open New Year Bookshop, citing lower rents and her passion for local reading culture.
The shop is located upstairs on Sai Yeung Choi Street South and opened on Sunday in a space of roughly 600 sq ft.
New Year Bookshop is offering more than 2,000 new and second-hand books focused on literature, history, and philosophy.
